Al-Quds Bard Fellowship Program

The Program
Living and working in the West Bank from August 1, 2019-May 31, 2020, Al-Quds Bard Fellows serve as full-time writing tutors and program support staff for Al-Quds Bard College for Arts and Sciences (AQB) undergraduate and Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) programs.
Structured as a multi-faceted fellowship year, the fellowship provides an opportunity for recent BA and MAT graduates of Al-Quds Bard College for Arts and Sciences (Abu Dis) and Bard College (Annandale) to gain hands-on teaching and program development experience with the first dual-degree program between US and Palestinian institutions of higher education. AQB emphasizes student-centered learning, the development of independent inquiry, and the free exchange of ideas and AQB Fellows play an important role in facilitating such an environment on campus.
Who Can Apply?
AQB Fellowships are competitive and open to recent BA and MAT graduates of any major programs of study at AQB, Bard College, Bard College Berlin, Smolny College, or the American University of Central Asia. Experience tutoring writing is strongly desired but not required. Similarly, knowledge of the region, or of Arabic, is an advantage but not required. The principal qualities AQB seeks in Fellows include maturity and social awareness, openness to other cultures, self-motivation and the ability to work both independently and as a team, an interest in institution-building and taking initiative, and a strong sense of professionalism.
Academic Resource Center Responsibilities
Fellows will provide undergraduate and MAT students with writing and English language support. This support includes tutoring in the Academic Resource Center, as well as running one section of an “intensive writing lab” or a similar section in the MAT program. Fellows design and conduct workshops for students. In addition, Fellows will be designated as support for one core course, including First Year and Sophomore Seminar, Arabic Composition, English Composition, Issues in Teaching and Learning, Culture, Identity, and the Classroom, Cognition and Learning, Curriculum and Instruction, and Theory and Practice of Teaching I, II, III. In this capacity, Fellows serve as a vital link between students and faculty, providing students with less formal instruction and support. While Fellows have the opportunity to audit one or more courses in their general field of interest, this is not required. Fellows are expected to be in the Academic Resource Center during working hours when not engaged in classroom or program support outside the Center.
Program Support Responsibilities
In addition to their Academic Resource Center responsibilities, Fellows are to provide program support to the growing institution, AQB. This support may take the form of student life development, graduate and alumni opportunity support, assistance in undergraduate recruitment and admissions, assistance with IT support services, assistance in communications, web, and social media presence, and other general administrative duties. 
The AQB Fellowship provides a monthly stipend of US $1,000 for full-time appointments. International fellows are additionally provided with shared housing in Bethlehem, one round-trip plane ticket, basic international travel insurance, and visa costs. Fellowships are eligible for renewal for an additional year subject to approval of the AQB program leadership.
