Program Description:
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was formed in 1988 as a United Nations body to “provide policymakers with regular scientific assessments on climate change, its implications, potential future risks, and to put forward adaptation and mitigation options.” The IPCC was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007. We are currently in the sixth assessment cycle and the first report “AR6 Climate Change 2021: The Physical Scientific Basis” is now available. The IPCC reports are notoriously difficult to read and such an endeavor can be frustrating. Hence in this course we will read and discuss excerpts of the first report together. Students will present selected chapters of: the Summary for Policymakers, Technical Summary, and explore regional climate changes in the Interactive Atlas. Having previously served on the IPCC, I will provide the necessary background information relevant to the readings and an overview of the IPCC history at the beginning of each class.
